Mitch wasn’t romantic. He didn’t remember anniversaries; he didn’t bring flowers; he didn’t write poetry. He considered himself too much of a down-to- earth realist to partake in the romanticism that made women swoon in romance novels.
Yet here he was, walking down Pine Lake’s Main Street with a picnic basket, a red-and-white checkered blanket, and a small bouquet of daisies.
He passed The Darling Diner on his way to Natalie’s office, and saw Susie through the window, taking orders from a table of four. She gave a quick wave when she saw him and then a thumbs-up when she saw what he was carrying.
Mitch grimaced. Great. If he didn’t watch it, he was going to get a reputation as the town’s romantic. If he started spouting poetry anytime soon, he’d need to have himself committed.
The town square was blessedly empty when he arrived, so he didn’t have to worry about prying eyes as he headed over to a sunny spot behind the gazebo and unfolded the blanket he’d brought and then spread it out on the ground, anchoring each of the corners with a rock. He set the picnic basket off to one side of the blanket, with the flowers resting on top.
Standing back to survey his work, Mitch felt a rush of excitement and worked to quickly squash the unwelcome emotion. Planning a surprise picnic lunch for Natalie was out of character enough for him.
As he crossed the street toward Pine Lake Investments, Mitch wondered if this was a sign he was getting too comfortable here. If he’d been on assignment, a picnic never would have occurred to him. He was turning into a different person the longer he stayed in Pine Lake––a softer, more thoughtful person. Most people would consider it a good thing. Except that in Mitch’s line of work, softness was weakness, and being thoughtful could drive you out of your mind.
Tiffany Marie grew up in Michigan and currently lives in northern Indiana with her wonderfully supportive husband, rambunctious young son, and two rescued pets. She has worked in an elementary school, a bookstore, and a winery, and now she stays home with her son and writes whenever she has a few minutes to spare. She spends her free time reading too many romance novels, drinking too much Diet Pepsi, and taking too many naps.
