I adore romances that involve athletes. I don't know what it is about them, but I always seem to gobbled them up in one day. They always seem to super fun, super quick books that I never want to put down. I had never read one of Jennifer Seasons' books, but I've heard a lot of great things about the first book in the series. Yes, I was a bad girl and read Playing the Field before the first book. I'm sorry! I'm a firm believer that, if possible, you should read books in order, but in this case, it wasn't necessary. Although characters do overlap, both books could be considered stand-alones.
Ok, back to Playing the Field. What's not to love about it? The characters were fantastic. The plot was fun. And the chemistry between Sonny and JP, Charlie and Sonny, and JP and Charlie rocked! Although he is younger, JP has a solid head on his shoulders. While his teammates are all about women, he wants to settle down with Sonny. He tries to win her over by including her and Charlie in his life, by showing them that he's not just a celebrity. Sonny has a more difficult time adjusting to his lifestyle and she tries to push him away. At some points, I felt like that she was being too harsh with JP, but then I stop and remember that she's not only a single mother, she also doesn't know what it feels like to be loved by someone that is not her son. This is all new to her and as a reader, I could feel her desperation and confusion jump off the page. Charlie was just flat out adorable. I loved his interactions with JP. It was obvious very early on that JP wasn't just falling in love with Sonny. He loved both mother and child. I loved that JP's big declaration of love was for both of them. *sigh*
Playing the Field was just a fun book from beginning to end. JP constantly startling Sonny had me cracking up. Charlie's broken heart and anger towards JP made me want to hug him. The three of them together made me smile. I enjoyed every minute of this book and I can't wait to see what Jennifer Seasons has in store for us next.
