A visit with Cynthia Sax, author of the Sinful Rewards 10

I am excited to welcome the wickedly talented Cynthia Sax here today to talk about crazy compliments. Cynthia is celebrating the release of Sinful Rewards 10 which came out yesterday.

Take it away, Cynthia!

Crazy Compliments We’ve Received

We’ve all received them – crazy compliments that we’re not sure are flattering.

My dear hubby told me, early in our relationship, that my backside must be jelly ‘cause jam don’t shake like that. I thought this was an insult. He told me it was a compliment and sure enough, I searched on the term, and it is!

One of my uncles tells me, every time I see him, that I have chicken legs. He beams when he tells me this. I’m guessing he thinks this comparison to poultry is flattering.

The first time I went to Paris, with a French Language Class, I was standing in the line to climb the Eiffel Tower. A man started growling at me in German. I apologized. He growled some more. I thought for certain he was angry with me and I had no idea what I had done. The more I talked, the more he growled. My teacher, after he stopped laughing, told me the man was flirting.

In Sinful Rewards 10, Hawke, one of the heroes, tells Bee, the heroine, that her hair reminds him of a dirt path. Yes. (winces) It isn’t the smoothest compliment but he meant well.

Here’s a snippet…

“Your hair reminds me of the dirt path between the apple orchard and Rock’s land.” Hawke carefully wipes away the trickle of lather sliding down my forehead.

“I see.” I twist my lips. My hair reminds him of dirt.

“You don’t see.” Laughter lightens his voice. “I’d race down that long, unbending path every morning.” He threads his fingers through my hair, straightening the twisted tendrils. “I was eager to see my best friend, to spend the day climbing trees and jumping into creeks and doing what boys do.”

I hear the happiness in his words, feel his delight in these memories, and my chest warms. His days at his family’s orchard seem like a magical time for me, a girl who grew up in the suburbs.

“And then when the day was done, I’d hike home,” Hawke continues, tilting me into the stream of warm water, rinsing the shampoo from my hair. “The setting sun would pick up the reds and browns in the dirt, and I knew at the end of that path, my mom and dad were waiting for me.”

He knew he had a home, that they would always be there, loving him, wishing for him to return. I stare at the shower tiles, fighting to control my emotions.

“That’s what I feel when I look at you.” He brushes the stray strands away from my face. “That joy.”
