Take it away, Jennifer!
Hello, Crystal! Thanks so much for hosting me today. As I thought about a topic for this post, I realized that we really are coming to the “end of an era” – RISK IT is the fourth and final book in the Rule Breakers series, which represents an 18-month journey for me as the four girls of Erin Connelly’s Boston brownstone took me along a wild ride with a rock star, a biker, a warrior and a playboy.
As I think back over the series, here’s my rundown of BEST, FAVORITE, WORST!
BEST Scene to write of the series
Boy, this was a tough one! There are so many I enjoyed writing—the opening of ROCK IT, the rehearsal dinner of FAKE IT, the office scene in RISK IT where Dani meets Rand for the second time—but perhaps the best scene experience for me was writing a new scene for WANT IT, which features Erin and her Army Sergeant ex-boyfriend Zander on a mission to save Erin’s mom. The scene takes place in a hotel just over the border in Mexico, and originally featured our intrepid hero and heroine coming back from dinner and surprising some very bad men who were in the process of ransacking their room. My editor and her assistant editor wisely thought that maybe that was a little too much action of the wrong sort for that point in the story, and suggested I write a more fun scene. What followed was a scene involving the resourceful use of the hotel pool. It just sort of flowed naturally, and readers must have agreed—it’s one of the most-mentioned scenes from that book!
FAVORITE Scene to write of the series
This one was a toss-up. The first two scenes of RISK IT—taking you from Dani’s first con of Rand to their office stand-off—practically seemed to write themselves. I had such a clear vision of these characters’ game of one-upsmanship that I couldn’t wait to see how their relationship developed from there. My other favorite scene, however, was from FAKE IT, which featured workaholic Anna and her devil-may-care stand-in date, Jake. It also featured a wedding, and a reception that found both our hero and heroine in a gorgeous aquarium room with walls of glass through which they could see dozens of exotic fish. Jake came up with an excellent use for that room, and Anna, though normally a somewhat uptight good girl, was very much on board with Jake’s suggestion. What resulted was a fun, sexy scene that was rendered somewhat hysterical with the audience of wide-eyed fish. It was a blast to write!
WORST Scene to write of the series
In this case, for me, “worst” means the most challenging. And that honor goes to RISK IT as well. Dani and Rand are both the products of their pasts, Rand with a troubled childhood and Dani having been shuttled through the foster care system. At one point in RISK IT, Dani confronts her foster-brother Jimmy, now grown up with problems of his own. As they meet at the broken-down playground near the foster home where they first met, Jimmy reminisces about the bad old days. You get a sense of why Dani became the woman she did, and how much of her hard edges were formed when she was very young. That, and a scene much later in the book where she shares even more of the hardships she endured, really got to me. I so wanted Dani to have her Happy Ever After when I was finished writing those scenes!
And there you have it! Here’s wishing you and your readers books filled with Best and Favorite Scenes as you tackle your TBR piles!

Jennifer Chance’s Rule Breakers series turns up the heat as a wealthy playboy and a beautiful con artist engage in a high-stakes game of seduction.
As dominating in business as he is in bed, Rand Sterling Winston IV always gets what he wants. And even before he realizes that she’s scammed him into paying triple the cost for her friend’s painting, he wants Dani Michaels. To catch her alone, Rand demands that she personally deliver his purchase. The attraction between them is immediate and electric, and he knows she feels it, too. So when the part-time petty thief rebuffs his advances, he gives her a choice: a night in jail or an evening with him.
Despite her checkered past, Dani has never met someone like Rand: brooding, intense, and oh so tempting. Only a man with a broken soul could make control feel this dangerous. Still, when Rand proposes a no-strings, no-holds-barred affair, Dani’s more than a little intrigued. It’ll be the trickiest con she’s ever run and a chance to indulge her steamiest fantasies—nothing more. But as their encounters grow increasingly intimate, Dani uncovers a vulnerable side to Rand’s steely exterior and opens her heart to the ultimate risk.
Jennifer Chance is the award-winning author of the new adult Rule Breakers series. A lover of books, romance, and happily-ever-afters, she lives and writes in Ohio.
