A visit with Samantha Chase, author of Made for Us

Please join me in welcoming Samantha Chase today! As she celebrates the release of Made for Us (the first book in her new series, The Shaughnessy Brothers), Samantha is here to talk about a hysterical topic... 5 ways to handle a grumpy hero!

Take it away, Samantha!

Hey, Everyone!  I’m Samantha Chase and super excited to be here with Crystal talking about my new contemporary romance, Made for Us, book one in my new family series, The Shaughnessy Brothers.  And I have to tell you, this family series is one that I know you are going to fall in love with as much as I have.

There are six siblings and at the point that you’re going to be meeting them, seventeen years has gone by and we see how the loss of their mother still affects who they currently are.  Each book will not only introduce you to an individual Shaughnessy as they navigate through their life and eventually find love, you get to spend a lot of time getting to know the rest of the family, as well.

The topic today is grumpy heroes and boy oh boy, am I happy to be here today for this one!  In Made for Us, Aidan Shaughnessy is definitely a grumpy hero.  He’s a workaholic who takes no time for himself – however, he is extremely devoted to his family.  So there’s hope for him, right?  Personally, I love a grumpy hero because watching his transformation can be very entertaining.  Here’s five ways to help the grumpster out:

1.  Don’t let him get away with it!  I tend to do that with a combination of snarkiness and humor.  When our hero is grumpy – whether it’s to the heroine or basically anyone else, I have them respond to him in a way that lets him know he’s acting ridiculous.

2.  Give him something to think about.  It’s a little like not letting him get away with it, but he kind of is – except our heroine gets the parting shot.  So when our hero is grumpy and maybe says something that isn’t very nice, she tells him what she really thinks but gets to walk away and leave him to deal with the realization that he’s hurt her feelings.

3.  Ignore him.  Sometimes no matter how hard you try, there is just no way to make a grumpy hero happy. That doesn’t mean our heroine’s don’t deserve a break.  A lot of times in a story, I’ll let the grumpy hero pout it out while the heroine goes out with her BFF and has a day of pampering or just a gripe-session with her about him.

4.  Show him what he’s missing – or have someone else show him!  Another classic way to deal with a grumpy hero is to have the heroine attempt to move on with her life OR to have someone close to the hero sit him down and force him to THINK about her moving on with her life – without him.  It’s usually a great wake-up call for him.

5.  Give him a sexy distraction!  Seriously, who stays grumpy when there’s an opportunity for some serious sexy time?  Hopefully the answer to that is…no one!

Can't make time for love?

The Shaughnessy brothers have spent the years since their mother's untimely death taking care of each other and trying to make their father proud. Oldest son Aidan is hard-working, handsome, successful-and still single. Sure, he'd like to have his own family someday, but who has the time?

She'll show him how to find it.

Zoe Dalton, a stunning designer Aidan meets on one of his construction jobs, has the beauty and heart to make Aidan realize how much he could be missing. But it's not easy to break down walls you've spent years building up. Now there's a major storm bearing down on the North Carolina coast, and it could be catalyst enough to force Aidan and Zoe into some major decisions of the heart.

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan's Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40's to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she's not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.

  2. Wow! Tough to call my favorite. I would say the Spikes & Spurs series by Carolyn Brown for contemporary and The Hellions of Hallstead Hall by Sabrina Jeffries for historical.

  6. My favorite is the Sweetest Kisses series by Grace Burrowes about three brothers who are partners in the same law firm. To me those books were so realistic that I was almost back to biting my nails.
