Pass the Popcorn: No gore for me!

As a fan of horror movies, I tend to stay away from films that are over-the-top gory. I'm okay with some blood and guts, but when it comes to movies like Saw... So not going to happen. Once was more than enough for me. Funny story... One night I was "watching" Hostel... Okay, so I was really only listening to it... When I turn back to the movie, I gagged at the scene that was happening. If you've seen the movie, it was the eyeball scene. That is all I'm saying! So, long story short... My favorite type of horror movies are paranormal or physiological thrillers. Movies that scare the shit out of you, but not with lots of blood.

One night a couple weeks ago I came across the Netflix original movie I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Holy cow, this movie was beyond what I was expecting. The idea behind the movie is that when someone dies in a house, nobody will ever own it. They are simply borrowing it from the dead. The movie starts off with Lily Saylor, a nurse that moves into the home of Iris Blum. Lily states early on that she will not live to see her 29th birthday. Why? Well, you'll have to watch the movie. Months pass and Lily begins to notice strange occurrences. An unexplained mold growing on the walls... Sections of an area rug that gets disturbed... Strange sounds and reflections with nobody there... All are "normal" phenomenons one would find in a paranormal horror movie. One night Lily discovers that Iris was once an author and begins to read her books. This is where things take a turn for the interesting. Lily tells Mr. Waxcap, an estate manager for Iris, that she's easily scared. You almost start to question whether or not she's really experiencing these unexplained events or are they figments of her imagination from living in near isolation for months. Before long things quickly begin to amplify as the movie approaches the point of no return. If you want to know what happens... Watch the movie.

What did I like about the movie? Everything! I loved the atmosphere that the filmmakers created. I loved that there really only two jump scares yet I was still on edge for the majority of the movie. I even had to pause the movie at the end to prepare myself. And that ending! It was understated yet powerful. Such a good movie!

What about the book? While I was watching the movie I was trying to read Need You by Stacy Finz. I have to admit that I didn't get to read much. The movie was that good. I read most of the book the following day. *grin* I did enjoy it, though! 1. Not a fan of blood and gore, I kept the light on for weeks after I saw The Exorcist, Yikes and one time my boyfriend and I saw Last House on the Left at the Drive In that was in the 1970s and the last time I've watched anything like that. OMG NO More

  2. Sounds like it might be an interesting movie. I rarely watch movies that are labeled as horror anymore because they are just make believe blood and gore...usually no real plot...but a I love a good paranormal that isn't obvious in your face. Just might have to watch it now, Crystal. :-)
