After escaping abusive parents and, later, an abusive relationship, Sarah Beckley has spent a lifetime watching snakes shed their skin. With two small children to care for and another on the way, she’s finally found a home in Peaceful Harbor with the brother she hasn’t seen in more than a decade. She’s still searching for her sister, but life is good. If only she could stop thinking about the sinfully sexy doctor/biker who has taken to her children like a loving uncle—and to her like a hungry man.
Trust doesn’t come easily for Sarah, but Bones Whiskey is patient and protective, amazing with her children, and he looks at her like she is the only woman he could ever want–and more. With two little ones underfoot, Sarah expects him to move on quickly, yet with every tender kiss and each trying moment with the children, Bones surprises her. But will the fiercely loyal biker stick around when Sarah’s worst secret is revealed, or will he shed his skin, too?
Oh, Melissa Foster... Why? Why did you do this to me? Just when I know what to expect with one of her books, Melissa goes and yanks the rug out from under me. Her books have varying levels of emotions from sweet and fun to angst city, but Wicked Whiskey Love was a beast unto it's self. Bones and Sarah served up a swift kick in the feels and I devoured it with a box of tissues by my side.
I've reviewed a lot of Melissa's books in the past, so instead of gushing about how much I adore her writing (which I do), I like to pick a word or phrase that I feel describes the book. For Wicked Whiskey Love, it was a bit difficult to pick just one word so I'm going with love heals all wounds. This should be Bones' motto throughout the book. As an oncologist, he's seen a lot of sadness and instead of focusing on the sad, he helps his patients look for the good. We get to watch him in his element with his patients. Listening to their fears and being that shoulder in case they need one. With Sarah, he wants nothing more than to show her the good in life. He wants to show her how love, his love, can heal the past and open her world to a future where love and family are key. It's not just him, too. The entire Whiskey clan open their arms and hearts to Sarah, her children, and even her brother Scott. I love that after such a dark time in her life, there is light at the end of the tunnel and it's very much within her grasp.
I adored Wicked Whiskey Love. Watching the extended family and friends grow has been so much fun. That is something I always look forward to when I'm reading any one of Melissa's series. They are always filled with love and family. From the looks some of the single characters are sharing with each other, the next couple of books are going to be fan-freaking-tastic. Can't wait!
“From the moment I first saw you, I had to see you again, and in the months since, that desire has intensified. I think about you and your children all the time.” He looked down at her belly, and then he gazed into her eyes and said, “And that little miracle, too.”
The breath rushed from her lungs. “You’re doing it again. I can’t breathe when you look at me like that.”
“Then why fight it? You’ve spent two months getting to know me. You know I’m not going to hurt you.”
“I can’t know that,” she said vehemently. “Good people do bad things. You said so yourself.”
His heart ached for what she must have been through to cause so much distrust. “That’s true. But after thirty-plus years I can honestly say I’ve never done a single bad thing toward a woman. It’s not in my makeup. I’ve done things I shouldn’t have, like most people, but hurting you will never be one of those things. If you let me into your world, into your life, I promise you that I’ll put my own life on the line before I let anyone hurt you or your children.”
She choked out a breath.
“Let me prove it to you, Sarah. Let me take you on a real date. Get to know me better and decide for yourself.”
“I can’t go on a date. The kids—”
“I have a whole family who will gladly watch them. Scott said he would, too.”
Her jaw dropped open. “You asked Scott?”
“He’s your brother. In my world that means he looks out for you and deserves a heads-up.” He spread his hand over her upper back, his fingers brushing the ends of her hair, and felt her heart beating rapidly.
The song ended, but they continued dancing. When the next song started he said, “Everyone is in our corner, darlin’. One date. One night to see if whatever this is between us is as real for you as it is for me.”
“How do you know it’s anything for me?”
Did she really think she hid her emotions that well? “You said you can’t breathe when I look at you.”
“Ohmygosh,” she whispered. “I’m the lamest woman on earth.”
“What does that make me? Because each and every time you look at me, I feel like I’m finally breathing for the very first time.”
