The Reluctant Nude by Meg Maguire

Author: Meg Maguire
Published: 2011

A brief synopsis from Goodreads:
Chipping away at her resistance, one touch at a time…

Fallon Frost’s late foster mother had done so much to heal the wounds of her damaged childhood. So when a lecherous developer plans to bulldoze her old home to make room for a strip mall, the practical, ordered life Fallon has built for herself is threatened.

Then he makes a twisted proposal. He’ll leave the land alone if she poses nude for a sculpture that’ll end up in his collection. Seeing no other choice, she heads for Nova Scotia—only to find something totally unexpected. A sexy, hot-blooded, infuriating sculptor.

Guarded, sexually detached Fallon is a challenge Max Emery can’t wait to tackle. Yet with each tap of his chisel, he uncovers a woman who rekindles a dream he thought lost. Home, family…love. And the closer he gets to her core, the harder it becomes to accept that he’s carving her naked body for another man’s eyes.

As progress on the sculpture almost grinds to a halt, their fragile fantasy world collapses under the weight of reality. Threatening Fallon’s one chance to save her foster mother’s land…and any chance she and Max have to find love.

My Thoughts:
I really wanted to love this book. I've heard good reviews on it and it's been recommended to me several times. However, I had mixed feelings.

Characters:
I hated Fallon. She grew on me once she loosened up towards the end of the book, but I could not stand her in the beginning. I think if her history and reasoning behind the sculpture had been introduced earlier, then I may have felt more compassion towards her. I wish her background had been discussed. Why was she an orphan until she was 15?

I liked Max from the beginning. He had a lot to put up with when dealing with Fallon. What I didn't like was his sudden temper at the end of the book. He had been sleeping with Fallon for weeks and then he suddenly gets pissed off because he's making a nude sculputre of the woman he loves for another man.

There are two secondary characters that play a big role in the story. Rachel, Fallon's best friend, was hysterical. I liked the fact that she tries to talk Fallon into loosening up. Donald left me confused. While I didn't like the fact that he was blackmailing Fallon into posing nude, I was on the fence on whether he was a pervert or just some guy that was hung up on her.

The Love Story:
I cannot say this enough...I freaking loved their romance. It is not the typical "lust at first sight." Max and Fallon don't jump each other on their second or third meeting. Instead, there romance blossomed from hating each other to hating being away from each other in several months. There are no outside forces pushing them together. They are thrown together in a remote location in Canada. The only other people around are an occasional town person and the phone calls home. There was no murder to push them together. There wasn't a family member's will that demanded one of them to get married. Instead, they simply grew on each other until love bloomed.

The Ending:
Without giving too much away, I can only say that I felt the book wrapped up a little too neatly. Donald's reasoning behind the blackmail was never explained. Why would a guy just hand over a million dollar estate for a sculpture? If Donald have never seen Fallon naked, why didn't she and Max just hire a model that resembled her? The ending would have been better with atleast one more chapter. All the "action" happened in one chapter and then it was over. If I blinked, I might have missed it.

Conclusion:
Like I said, I really wanted to love the book. I didn't hate it, but it is not one of my favorites. I loved the romance between Max and Fallon, but the book just left me confused with too many unanswered questions. I haven't given stars on my blog yet, but I'd give this one 3 to 3 1/2 stars.

that is a lot of books...

Hello there ...

My local main library has a small Friends of the Library bookstore. It is an evil, evil place. Who am I kidding? The place is addictive. Hauls are rare for me so I though I would share the books I got.

A little warning: I tend to buy mostly non-romance books at the bookstore. I don't know why, but is usually how it is.

My RWA Experience...

Let me start off this blog post (more like rambling) and say that I have never met any of my favorite authors nor have I emailed them to express my love for their books. Don't ask me why because I honestly could not tell you. When I found out through Facebook that the Romance Writers of America (RWA for short) was having their annual conference in Anaheim, CA, I was excited. When I found out that they had an event called literacy signing and several of my favorite authors were going to be there ... I almost fell off my chair. I was finally going to meet my favorite authors. After about 30 minutes of jumping up and down, I was hit with a wave or nervousness. I'm strange that way. Here is my brief (and a little fangirl) experience of the RWA literacty signing...

I planned to arrive at the Anaheim Convention Center about a hour before the doors opened thinking that the line wouldn't be too long. HA! Boy was I wrong... I'd say there were about 150 to 200 women already in line. Wow! My place in line was perfect since it was right next to where the authors were entering the ballroom. Talk about a parade of authors. I felt a little out of place because those around me knew almost all of them and I only knew a handful. Excitement rushed through everyone as the doors open and we scattered to meet our favorite authors.

I have been a big Lisa Jackson fan for years. My collection of her romantic suspense novels is almost complete (darn you Malice!). So needless to say, she was my first stop. Yeah ... I turned into a total fangirl. I gushed and I praised and I probably made a total fool of myself. That's okay, I'm sure she gets that a lot right? RIGHT? After her signing a book for me and I was able to move my feet, I made my way to my new favorite author, Candis Terry. I recently discovered her "Sugar Shack" series. Love them! Then my next stop was Catherine Bybee. We shared a story about our last names. They are the same name, but spelled differently. You don't see too many Bybee's around. When I left her table, it dawned on me that I totally forgot to take pictures. D'OH! So, back to Candis and Lisa I went. I just embarrassed myself twice in one night. A new record! Other authors I met were Sylvia Day (Gideon sends his love to ME!), Maya Banks, Jaci Burton, and Leslie Kelly. I also had a short chat with Lena Diaz. And I am still kicking myself for not getting her book while I was there. All of the ladies were so nice.

My only regret was that I didn't learn about the event sooner. Since the proceeds from the book sales went to local charities, I would have loved to buy more books there. My budget was limited because I had only heard of the event two weeks prior. If I was able to get more, I think I would have met more authors. I had the mindset that if I hadn't read their book, I shouldn't approach the author. Stupid, I know, but I get very overwhelmed with large events like this. I still had a blast, though. And my adventure was a success because my goal was to meet Lisa Jackson. She made it all worth it.

I have never seen so many women (and a few poor men who were relegated to carrying books) in one place in my life. And I do craft fairs...

If the RWA is in your neck of the woods, check it out. The literacy signing is so worth the maddness.

Insatiable by Cari Quinn

A brief synopsis from Goodreads:

Having all of her is the only thing that will satisfy him...

Shawn Griffin and Rachel Cooper have been best friends practically since birth, thanks to their families' close relationship. But for the past few years, Shawn has been fantasizing about getting his best pal in his bed. When she announces she's taking a trip to reconnect with an old lover, Shawn knows the time has come to put up or shut up. If she wants to go to New York City, fine. But he's coming with her.

Rachel doesn't know what to think of Shawn's sudden interest. Determined to live life on her own terms, she refuses to fall right in line with her wealthy family's wish that they get married and have perfect little babies. She just didn't count on how determined her seemingly laid back -- and extremely sexy -- best friend would become after setting his sights on what he wants. Her, over and over again.

But when tragedy strikes, Rachel begins to wonder if she'll lose not only her lover but her best friend too.

My Thoughts:
As a whole, I really enjoyed the book. It was funny, sexy, and light summer read. I loved the fact that we get a role reseveral of sorts. In romances with childhood friends, it is usually the girl that has been in love with the boy since they were teenagers. With Insatiable, it is Shawn that has been in love with Rachel and he is finally going to do something about it. He follows her to New York and lays his heart out for her. *swoon* Rachel, on the other hand, got on my nerves for most of the book. First, she follows an ex-boyfriend to another state in hopes of hooking up with him. She hasn't even told Shawn (her closest friend) what really happened when they broke up. I also felt that she over reacted when their familes found out about them. The tragedy in the end of the book was heartbreaking. I really felt bad for Shawn, but happy in the way it ended.

Must read more of her books!

Hooked on You by Lindsey Brookes

Published: June 11, 2012

A (not so) brief synopsis from Good Reads:
Chase Reynolds donated to a sperm bank years before while working on the police force, having no idea that a few months later an injury would leave him unable to father his own child. Now divorced and working as a private investigator, he’s about to find himself facing a past he’d just as soon forget.

When Shay McDaniels learns that her father has been receiving threatening letters, she heads to the resort he owns in the Keys, hoping to convince him to bring in the police. He stubbornly refuses, telling her that bad publicity of any sort could hurt his business.

Chase has no idea that the young woman he meets on the beach, the one whose son is determined to ‘catch his mommy a man’ is James Lansing’s daughter and grandson. The background check he’s done on James Lansing has his daughter currently living in Miami. So when he catches glimpses of her talking to James, even hugging him, she moves to the top of Chase’s suspect list.

For the first time since her divorce, a man succeeds in stirring Shay’s passion. But more importantly, he makes her son smile. Unfortunately, Chase Reynold’s constant proximity to her father stirs her suspicion as well.

When James Lansing invites both Shay and Chase to join him in the private dining room, they discover each other’s true identities. Then Lansing informs Chase he’s to become his daughter’s personal bodyguard until the situation with the threats is taken care of. Being thrown together twenty-four hours a day is the last thing Chase wants, considering the growing feelings he has for Shay. Distraction can make a man careless. But he accepts, determined to protect her and her son with his life.

Shay finds herself falling for her ‘bodyguard’, a man determined to keep his heart at bay because he believes she deserves a man who can give her more children. Can she convince him he really is her happily-ever-after? Or will secrets uncovered succeed in tearing them apart?

My Thoughts:
Let me start by saying that I got this book when it was free on Amazon shortly after it was published. I love free books because you can find diamonds in the rough. Hooked on You was a diamond. I love books that are quick, fun reads with a bit of sex appeal. With the exception of James, I felt the characters were well developed. Chase "Tarzan" Reynolds' background felt real, although I was perplexed about his injury and why it caused him to be infertile. Shay's background was hysterical with her "queen" of an ex-husband. Her son was adorable.  I did feel that James' health issue should have been given more page time. It felt like it was a last minute addition because there were no hints given. As for Shay's friend, I really hope Ms. Brookes writes a sequel and gives Dee her own story.

I love reading books like Hooked on You. It was a fun read that I stayed up to finish because I was having too much fun in their world. It is a good thing Good Reads doesn't track time on your status updates. :)

Fragile & Broken by Shiloh Walker

Author: Shiloh Walker
Published: 2009

Author: Shiloh Walker
Published: 2010

As an introduction to the world of Shiloh Walker, I could not have picked better books. Fragile and Broken are the stories of twin brothers, Luke and Quinn Rafferty. Fragile starts off with a short background into the brothers as children. They were separated at birth and had two very different childhoods. Luke had a relatively happy childhold living with his father. Quinn, on the other hand, was abused by their mother. The brothers were reunited at the age of 11 when their mother dies. As adults, both Luke and Quinn join the military and move up the ranks to become Rangers. Luke is forced to go on medical discharge while Quinn spends another couple of years.

Fragile is the story of Luke and Devon Manning. Like Quinn, Devon grew up as an abused child both physically and sexually. She becomes a social worker is able to confide in Luke because, as a resident at the hospital, he also sees some of the cases she works on. Over the course of the book, Luke works to break down the walls that Devon had sheltered herself with and together they fight off a stalker that is trying to get his revenge.

In Broken, Quinn is a "broken and battered" soul. After his mother's death, things began to improve until the night the women he loved and his Army brother were killed. It was his fault, or so he believed, and he left the Army. Living in a small basement apartment and working as a bounty hunter, Quinn meets Sara Davis. For the first time, Quinn starts to let his guard down and truly falls for Sara. Until her secret comes out and Quinn is forced to make a decision: finally trust someone that is not his brother or let go of the only women he's loved.

I really enjoyed both books. The author takes her time setting with the character and background build-up. We're not suddenly thrown into the middle of the story without an inkling of what is going on. In both Fragile and Broken, the past is woven into the storyline with ease in flashbacks of all four characters. Walker also breaks her characters down to their core before they are able to fight. What I appreciated the most was that the suspense aspects of the books were not in your face. You almost don't know what clues have to do with the suspense and which clues were just bad luck for the characters. With Devon, for example, there are small events that happen to her in the beginning that were subtle and made me wonder if that was her stalker or just a bad blub. In the end, of course the little clues make more sense. I have to be honest and say that there is a part in Fragile that really freaked me out. I had to read it a couple times before grasping what the heck happened.

If you enjoy romantic suspense, then I think you'll enjoy Fragile and Broken.
